The Nebraska Voting Rights Restoration Coalition is composed of over 30 statewide and local organizations, led by directly impacted individuals and their family members. We believe that people who have been impacted by the criminal legal system are the most integral voices in changing it. Our mission is to remove barriers to civic participation for those impacted by the criminal justice system. We want everyone to be able to access their right to vote, serve on a jury, and run for office.
We were proud to support Senator Wayne's LB20, to remove the 2 year waiting period for those with felony convictions. We worked tirelessly alongside senators to pass this bill with a 38-6-2 vote on April 18, 2024. We mobilized when the Attorney General and Secretary of State acted to block the law from taking effect, and we were proud to stand with the ACLU, another founding member of the Voting Rights Restoration Coalition, when they challenged these actions at the Nebraska Supreme Court- and WON.
Now, the rights of those with previous felony convictions have been restored. But the work is not over. In Nebraska, 95% of people who are incarcerated will return to their communities. Every day, people complete their sentences and regain their rights to vote. Our coalition exists to make sure every voice is heard, in public and at the ballot box.
We continue to work toward future lawmaking sessions on bills that would reinstate the right to vote immediately upon release, allowing those convicted of felonies but sentenced to probation to retain voting rights; and allow people who have served felony sentences to run for office and serve on juries.
